First of all, all the discoveries, an extraordinary era of discoveries in science, all possible fields of knowledge. But also, he was a part of the history of his century, and was part of it quite dramatically, quite tragically. Some of his music has that sense of tragedy to it, but also a sense of humor. It was music that never fell into pathos, because he was too attracted by life. Hundreds of individuals were accused of witchcraft in what would become the Commonwealth of Massachusetts between 1638 and 1693. Another accused Boston witch, known as Goodwife Ann Glover or Goody Glover, was hanged in the city in 1688. Jane Swift signed a bill exonerating five women executed during the witch trials in Salem. Nineteen were hanged during the Salem witch trials while a 20th victim was pressed to death. Johnson is believed to be the last accused Salem witch to have her conviction set aside.

The U.S. government in May ended the COVID public health emergency declaration during which it bought the shots and provided them to all Americans for free. In the current privatized system, health insurance plans by law must cover the shots at no cost. McKesson (MCK.N), one of the largest U.S. wholesalers, said it has distributed over 3.8 million shots so far. "Health insurance providers continue to educate Americans about where and how to get their COVID vaccines within their plan’s coverage," David Allen, a spokesperson for insurance lobby group AHIP said. Now that the government is no longer footing the bill for their vaccine supply, pharmacy owners need to pay for the shots.

I first got to know his music, and first sang his music, as a teenager at school in Scotland. His music is known among the singing community, the choral community, but maybe beyond that he’s not as well known as he should be. Classical music audiences tend to forget about the pre-Baroque, and it’s a pity because William Byrd is one of music history’s great figures. Another wonderful motet by Byrd is “Justorum animae,” which is basically a commemoration or a celebration of martyrs. I think Byrd and Tallis knew people who were arrested, and I think there were some composers for one reason or another during this time arrested.

Achieving that ideal was no simple task with orchestras of long traditions and routines, though Abbado remade the Philharmonic in his image, and lastingly so. Striving to fulfill that promise led him not only to embrace the energy of youth orchestras, but also to support and found ensembles of like mind: the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the Orchestra Mozart. The most extravagant was the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, a coterie of colleagues and admirers with whom he gave critically sanctified summer performances from 2003 until just before his death. The breadth is extraordinary — what other conductor was as adept as Abbado in Rossini as well as in Webern and Ligeti? — yet it still excludes records he made for EMI, RCA and Sony, as well as most of his vaunted Mahler from Lucerne.
